Welcome back to The Update, a monthly newsletter discussing real estate related topics, and fun things happening in the community! It’s October, so let’s get spooky!

Market Update

Starting off, we have our monthly update on the market. Take a look to check out the stats for single family homes for Kenosha, Racine, and Milwaukee Counties!

What does this mean for you, as a home owner thinking of selling, or a buyer looking to buy? Currently, we’re in what’s called “the slow season” - usually starting in late August, and ending in March.

Why is it called “the slow season?” Well, there’s a few reasons. The first one being is that right away we’ll have a bunch of holidays; Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year-and people don’t want to either:

a) move during that time or,

b) have to get their homes ready to show; it’s simply too busy. This isn’t to say that there are no homes available during this time of year; simply less of them.

For families with kids in school, the year usually starts in September-so why pull your child out of school in the middle of the year (if you end up switching districts) if you don’t have to? Holidays aside, the next school break where it might make sense to make that move is, you guessed it, spring break; then the 3 month summer break until school starts back up again.

So there’s no need to fear-this is still a seller’s market. We’ve just hit our usual seasonal slowdown and the market is still strong. Our current days on market is 7 days, according to MetroMLS; the same as we saw in September of last year.

For buyers, this may be a reprieve to try to get an offer accepted since you may not be competing with as many people, and for sellers this may mean that you see prices fall slightly due to overpricing and the seasonal lull, with a little bit more time on the market.

Get in the Halloween Spirit with some Fun Actives to Help usher Fall in!

It’s that time of the year! (and my favorite time, personally.) The leaves are changing, the temps are finally dropping, which can only mean one thing; it’s October! Spooky season has arrived. Aside from getting ready for going out to have fun, or going out for trick or treating, here’s a few ideas to help get you in the spirit, if you haven’t done so already.

  • Get your pumpkins and carve! Swan’s Pumpkin Farm (Caledonia) and The Jerry Smith Pumpkin Farm (Kenosha) are open for their fall season, for not only pumpkins, but fun festivities such as corn mazes, hot apple cider, and of course grabbing a pumpkin pie.

  • If pumpkins aren’t your style, there’s always Sturtevant’s Apple Holler for all your apple picking needs! Grab a bushel of apples, and maybe a pie from the country store.

  • In Racine, check out The Great Pumpkin Chuckin Fest! With free admission on October 23rd, this festival from 10am-6pm will have teams chucking pumpkins in catapults (yes you heard that right) to see how far they can go and other fun events! Learn more here.

  • For those looking to be more active, check out Kenosha’s Hot Cider Hustle; a 5k walk/run on October 17th! Waiting at the finish line for all participants of course, hot apple cider and a caramel apple to celebrate. If this deadline is a bit too close for comfort, consider the Apple Cider Hustle taking place in Shorewood in Milwaukee (a half marathon & 5k run/walk) on October 23rd! Learn more here.

  • In Milwaukee (Well, Oak Creek specifically) check out their Fall Festival! On October 23rd form 9am-6pm enjoy things such as the farmers market, hay ride, pumpkin decorating, a costume parade and more! Learn more about the festival here.

  • Looking for something indoors, or perhaps something a bit more artistic? Consider either:

    • Racine’s Try It Thursdays! With no supplies required, the Racine Art Museum will be have you paint along a beautiful scene of stacked pumpkins that you can take home when you’re done. The event takes place on Thursday, October 21st from 6pm-8pm with tickets at $30. They are limited, so if you’re interested, learn more here.

    • Van Gogh Milwaukee! Truly immerse yourself into some of Vincent Van-Gogh’s most famous paintings while experiencing an engaging journey into Van Gogh himself; his thoughts, dreams and words, all while seeing his beautiful pieces of post-impressionist paintings projected throughout the space. Tickets in October are available from now until October 31st. Learn more or purchase tickets here.
